Set over 21,000 years into the future, Eve Online's background story explains that humanity, which has used most of Earth's resources through explosive population growth, began to colonize the remnants of the Milky Way. As on Earth, this expansion also led to competition and fighting over available resources, but everything changed with the discovery of natural wormholes that lead to unexplored galaxies which were later dubbed "New Eden." Dozens of colonies were erected, and a structure, a kind of gate (containing the words "EVE" on the side of the New Eden), was built to stabilize the wormholes connecting the New Eden colony with the rest of human civilization.

However, when the wormhole suddenly collapses, it destroys the gate and the relationship between the colony of New Eden and the Milky Way. Separated from human remains and supplies from the Earth, the New Eden colony was left to starve and cut off from one another; many were edited entirely. For thousands of years, descendants of surviving invaders managed to rebuild their own communities, but at this time memories and knowledge of human origins, from the Earth and the Milky Way galaxy, as well as the history of the New Eden settlement, have been lost; little information that survived transmission over generations was misunderstood, lost in translation, and / or sent to mythology. Five different large societies stand out from the surviving colonies, each growing into an interstellar space-capable civilization. Countries based around these communities formed five main factions on Eve Online: the Amarr Empire, the Caldari State, the Gallente Federation, the Minmatar Republic and the Jove Directorate.
