Unlike other large multiplayer online games, the character of players at Eve Online advances continuously over time with training skills, a passive process that occurs in real-time so the learning process continues even if the player is not logged in. The skills training queue allows up to 50 skills to be scheduled, with a total training schedule of 10 years. Before the November 4, 2014 release "Phoebe", the skills training queue allowed skills to be scheduled to start training for only 24 hours in the future. Some skills require other prerequisite skills to be trained to a certain level to be trained, and some skills require more time to train than others; for example, the skills to fly a Titan class spaceship take 8 times longer to train than the skills to fly a frigate, with a large number of prerequisite skills.

Until the Odyssey expansion, it was not possible to train more than one character per account at the same time. Odyssey introduces "Dual Character Training", which allows players to spend PLEX (see accounts and subscriptions) to allow the account to train a second character for 30 days, equivalent to paying a 30 day subscription on another account to be trained in one character. Odyssey 1.2 introduces the more general "Multiple Character Training" which allows players to spend another PLEX to activate this feature for the third character on the account.
